General Questions

1. How does this service work?

When you enter in your rating information, this service calculates individual quotes with 30 different insurance companies in the database and arranges them by price, giving you the three lowest:

2. Is the rate accurate?

We use the same rating software as the majority of brokers in the country (Compu-Quote Rating Services). When you call a broker, they take your details and do quotes with the companies they are contracted with, usually 3 or 4 different companies, and then give you a rate from those, not always the lowest. We use a database of 30 different companies and do not sell insurance, which lets us give you the lowest rates and then direct you to either brokers, agents, or the insurance company website which lets you search for brokers or agents who are contracted to write with the company.

Rates are based on the information provided, and we update regularly to ensure our accuracy.

90% of rate discrepancies occur due to the wrong information being input, either by the driver or by the broker/agent. For example, many car models are similarly-named (Nissan Altima instead of Nissan Altima SE), and this can lead to a considerable difference in rates. We take every rate discrepancy seriously and if the problem is with our rates, we will be glad to refund the charge.

3. What if I don't receive contact information for the company?

When you complete the questions on the form, you will be given the lowest rate available in our database of 30 companies.

You must click on the "Click here to get insurance company name" button and complete the rest of the form before you are given the company information. If you did not do this, then the quote was not saved into our system and you will have to re-do the quote form.

If you need more assistance, you can get step-by-step instructions on how to get the lowest insurance company information for you.

4. My credit card was charged but I didn't receive any information.

Please let us know immediately about this so we can quickly re-process the information for you. More information is also available to help you get the lowest insurance rate.

5. Is this a secure site?
Yes. We use GeoTrust 128-bit Digital Certificates to encrypt data to the highest industry standard for secure internet transactions.

6. My current insurance company has significantly increased my rate.

Use the Insurance Quote section to do a rate comparison. You can compare whether your rate is comparable to the lowest from our rate comparison of 30 different insurance companies in our database. If you find that your rate is lower, that means you're paying a fair price for your insurance. If your rate is higher, we suggest that you proceed in getting the insurance company name.

7. Is there a fee?

To receive the insurance company information, we will either direct you to a broker or agent representing that company or to the insurance company website to find a broker/agent.

When we can direct you to an insurance broker or agent that's participating with the cost of this service, it's complimentary. But, today, most brokers and agents are not able to absorb the cost of offering a professional rate search service because of unfavourable market conditions. In some cases, there may be a small service fee to receive the name of the insurance company with the guaranteed lowest rate.

So, the rate and contact information will be given to you - FREE - if the broker or agent is able to absorb the cost. And if not, you'll need to pay only $8.50 to receive the name of the insurance company and contact information. Before you are asked to pay anything, you'll be shown what the lowest rate quoted is and know how much money you can save immediately. And when you click to receive the insurance company information you will be told if any charge will be necessary.

10. What is the difference in insurance if my vehicle is financed?

There is no difference in insurance rates, if the vehicle is financed or not. The only difference may be that if the vehicle is financed, the finance company may want you to carry full coverage, that means that you must have collision and comprehensive coverages on your policy.

11. I have an RV/motorhome that I want to insure.

We do not offer rates for RV's, however, the best place for your RV insurance would be where you place your auto insurance. They can add this to your auto package and often add discounts for packaging the two together. All companies which offer auto insurance also insure your RV.

Adding your home insurance to that package can further reduce both your auto insurance and often the RV insurance as well.

Technical Questions

1. My car model is not listed.

Check which page you are on. If you are on the first page, please select only the Car Make. The model will become available for selection on the next page. For example, if you are driving a Chevrolet Malibu, you would select Chevrolet/Geo as the car make on Page 1, then you can select the Malibu on page 2.

If the model list does not contain the vehicle you are looking for, it could be three things:

1. If your vehicle is older than 15 years, it may no longer be in the database. Please select a comparable model to complete your quote, then contact the brokers or agents offering the lowest rate to confirm the price.
2. If the vehicle was released this year, it may not be in the current version of the vehicle database. This database is released 4 times a year, so please select a comparable model and contact the broker or agent to confirm the price.
3. You may also want to verify that you selected the proper car make on Page 1. You may have to complete the form before it lets you go back to Page 1. If you get error messages while trying to access the first page, please complete the page with all the necessary information.

Step-by-step instructions are available to assist you so you can get the best insurance rates.

2. The form says "The model of car selected does not exist in the year" I selected.

The vehicle database only goes back 15 years. If your car is "Older" then it will not rate. Please use a comparable model from a later year and contact the brokers or agents to confirm the price. If the vehicle is brand-new, it may not be in the database. The database is updated 4 times a year, so it may not be in the latest update. Please use a comparable model and speak with the broker or agent to confirm.

Also, please ensure that you have selected the proper model. Many models are very similar in name, but not in years produced. The Honda Accord EX-R 4 Door and the Honda Accord EX-V6 4 Door are very close in name, but not in the years they were produced. As a result, you may have selected the wrong one.

Our vehicle database may also have it under a different name, which can lead to confusion. If you have this problem, please look at the top of the page. There is a link that lists all of the car models and the years they are available in. Or, you can consult your current insurance policy, and it should be on there as well.

Step-by-step instructions are available to assist you so you can get the best insurance rates.

3. The form says "Incorrect dates for G1 and G2 licence." (Or G and G2 licence)

If you were licensed before 1994, please enter in the year you received your licence. Then skip the G1 and G2 question.

If you were licensed after 1994, please enter in the year you received your full G licence. If you currently have a G1 or a G2 licence only, then leave this question as N/A and proceed to complete the G1 and G2 section below. If you have previous experience from another country, please use the dates of your Ontario licence. Further discounts may apply when you speak with the broker or agent.

The G1 licence is the written test.

The G2 licence is the next level after passing a road test. Please note that the date of the G2 can not be before the G1.

4. I can't add the secondary driver from the first vehicle as the primary driver of the second vehicle.

If you have two cars and two drivers, there is an option to select which driver is the primary and secondary driver of the second car, since you have already input this information on the first car. This way, you do not need to re-input the same information.

You may experience an error message saying "There's no secondary driver on the first car." This is due to the first car having only one driver. You may have completed information for the secondary driver, but you only selected ONE DRIVER at the top of the page. As a result, only the primary driver's information is there.

You will need to go back to that page by using the "Back" button in your browser and change to two drivers. Then proceed to Page 3.

5. I need home insurance as well.

We recommend that you first do an auto insurance rate comparison for the lowest rates, then speak with that broker or agent. They can advise you of the price including any discounts that may apply for having multiple policies with the same company. You should also do a home insurance rate comparison for the lowest rates to compare.

6. I have experience driving elsewhere besides Canada.

CANADIAN (OUT-OF-PROVINCE) OR AMERICAN EXPERIENCE:

Note that standard Canadian insurance companies recognize American and Canadian driving experience and insurance experience.

There are many US clients who find this site and are either moving to, or just moved to Canada. For good insurance rates, you will need a “letter of experience” from your current insurance company if you are from out-of-province, but with Canadian or American insurance history. You will also need driver abstracts from the corresponding authority in your province or state.

Enter your appropriate Canadian or American driving information to obtain an accurate quote.

If you are looking at moving to Canada but do not have a Canadian licence yet, please use the current month/year for the G1 (beginner) and G2 licence (intermediate) to see what your rates would be. Contact the Ministry of Transportation, licensing department to find out if you qualify for the full G driver licence. A driver abstract will be required.

DRIVING EXPERIENCE OUTSIDE CANADA AND USA

In Ontario, standard insurance companies do not recognize insurance history outside Canada or USA. There are a few options open to new drivers to Ontario, who have been licensed and insured outside Canada.

The first option is to determine if your current insurance company does business in Ontario. If they do, that insurance company may consider a preferred rate for you, based on their company record with you.

If they do not operate in your new province, you will be looking at higher rates and you will need to shop around to find an insurance company which may offer a three or even four star driving record. This will be based on a “Letter of Experience”, from your present insurance company, professionally written and translated into English if necessary, by qualified translators. At best, this will only allow a four star driving record, so the rate will still be quite high.

There are licence issues as well. While the Ministry of Transportation may recognize driving history outside Canada and USA, most insurance companies do not. Your driving record may also be lowered, thereby increasing your rate. You will also need to bring a driver abstract with you from your present corresponding authority. Shop for your insurance rate, but do not just look for the immediate quote. Ask how long it will be before you have preferred rates and does the broker/agent have the market to move you to preferred rates when you qualify and find out when that will be, based on a clear driving record.

If you have driving experience outside of Canada or USA, you may be credited for it when you speak with the insurance broker or agent about the rate. However, InsuranceHotline.com does not calculate for international experience.

9. I'm a Mac user and I can't enter postal codes using the Safari web browser.

Please note that there is a bug in the current version of Safari that causes postal codes to be changed automatically by the web browser. This is due to a conflict between the AutoFill forms feature and the standard Mac OS Address Book.
Until Safari is updated, there are two possible workarounds.

Disable AutoFill

1. Click on Safari menu bar.
2. Select Preferences.
3. Click on the AutoFill tab.
4. Note which boxes are checked and uncheck all 3 checkboxes.
5. Retry entering your postal code. You may have to restart Safari.

Once you have completed your quote, you can re-enable AutoFill by checking the boxes that you noted in step 4.

-OR-

Use an alternate web browser.
FireFox and Internet Explorer are two browsers that allow proper postal code entry.

You should try refreshing the page. If you are using Internet Explorer, press the F5 key at the top of your keyboard to refresh. If you are using Netscape/Mozilla, press the CTRL key and hold it down and press the letter R to refresh.
